getting a new puppy

Let’s be honest – getting a new puppy is a HUGE deal!

There is a lot of fluffy cuteness, sleepless nights, and, let’s not forget, those tiny, razor-sharp tiny teeth.

I’m not going to sugarcoat it: puppies are HARD WORK.

I know, they are extremely cute, so cute that it hurts! But a puppy will turn your routine upside down and test your patience in ways you never imagined.

If you are bringing a shelter puppy home, you are my new hero!

Why You’re a Rockstar for Getting a Puppy

bringing a puppy home
  • You’re committed. You know it’s not just playtime and snuggles. You’re ready for potty training at 3 AM and chewing mishaps that make your heart sink. Yet, you choose this anyways. That’s dedication!
  • You’re selfless. Your life changes the moment that puppy steps through the door. Your time and energy get poured into this little creature who needs you for everything.
  • You have a giant heart. Especially if you’re giving a shelter pup a second chance! You’re opening your home to a dog who might come with some extra energy but has so much love to give.

The Beautiful Chaos

Puppies have endless energy, zero attention span, and a knack for chewing the wrong things.

But in that chaos, there’s magic. You’re witnessing a little personality blossom. You’re setting the foundation for a lifelong bond.

When that puppy finally looks at you with those big, trusting eyes, your heart melts.

What I wish I knew before getting a puppy (A quick checklist for those starting out)

things no one tells you about getting a puppy
  • Things they don’t tell you: Puppies sleep A LOT (but not at night), those little teeth HURT, and your floors may see some messes.
  • Dog Costs: All new dogs will come with more expenses than you had before them. Be ready to add around $2,330 to your credit card debt during the first year. Read more about dog costs like vet visits, vaccinations, a crate, dog food, leash/harness, toys, treats, dog boarding, and lots of paper towels.
  • Find a good vet: Vaccinations and checkups are key for those early months.
  • Puppies chew everything: Say goodbye to your favorite slippers!

You may need my New Puppy Checklist to help make the process smoother. Get it—it’s on Sale! Or my (Free) Dog Vaccination Record to keep all your dog’s info in one place.

Puppy Life vs. Older Dogs

puppy vs dog

I love Chevy, my sweet senior rescue. Adopting him was a breeze compared to puppyhood. He was already house-trained, knew how to walk on a leash, and loved just chilling on the couch.

I adopted a puppy a long time ago, my first dog, Bruno. And I occasionally dog sit puppies and all kinds of dogs; let me tell you, puppies are a whole different ballgame!

My advice to you is to get a dog that matches your lifestyle; that’s the most important thing!
